How do we keep driving? And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. John: Its fascinating you say that. Peter Feigin: I'm not a good example of life balance, because I kind of blend them in such a big way that my kids, my brothers, my mother, my wife, they're all a part of it. Welcome to the impact podcast, Peter. She is like, "We're in this together." We have large sections that you never think about 10 years ago that people hang out at a bar, never have a seat, never, standing room only. You end up with a Jew holiday, who is this incredible, understated, all star. There was a collective effort on you guys to really, really embrace the city. And everyone was thrilled when Keefe showed up. By form, I think your strength of your network is as strong and as smart as you can possibly be. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin received the Crystal Living Legend award from founders of the Black Inventors Gallery at a meet-and-greet with business leaders Wednesday. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. Talk about that. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he'll certainly know the business and he'll help you out beyond your hedge fund guys and your data guys.". Peter: Weve been married like a hundred years. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. Peter: to anybody I thought was of great skill and value for selfish reasons to feel good. So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. We call it volundeering. I asked every good question, every dumb question you could possibly imagine to really learn. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. Talk a bit about how to do that without bruising anyones ego and keeping everybody happy. He's bigger, Giannis is even outside of the country than he is inside of it. Feigin was a four-year member of the men's soccer team as a midfielder during his undergraduate career at Franklin & Marshall. Daniel connected the partners with Peter, then chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, to analyze the franchise from a sales and development angle. Peter Feigin, President of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice President of Marketing for the New York Knicks and Director of Marketing at Six Flags, joins me on the podcast today. I just think were just laughing that its so great to have, we have an ice cream Wednesday where its supposed to be Tuesdays, but we incentivize to ride his ice cream truck around the floor and around the facility to do a break. "He plays with the Bucks 95 percent of the time. The first game goes to 9 points, and every game after that goes to 7. power forward, Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician. We've gotten through conversations. This was the Milwaukee Bucks at the time had lost the most games in the NBA, had the least revenue, had the least season ticket holders, any metric you could measure. Talk about that. But he worries about the physical effects of another extended layoff. You miss making a game-winning shot. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. He was unfamiliar with Lasry, then his friend filled him in. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Youve got Jamie Dimon, who is this incredible long-term equity holder who is done it and then youve got Mike Fascitelli whos really was the chairman and CEO of Vornado Real Estate in New York on the commercial real estate side. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. Because I know a lot of coaches, lot of presidents, lot of GMs, I run into them and I ask them, can I look at your ring? But the honesty of saying you dont know all the answers and figuring out what the solutions are is probably like pretty powerful in the way things work. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. Just shut up for 15 seconds. Its rotating cast includes bankers, lawyers and high-powered television executives. Here is your example of everything you read everything you hear, everything he does is true. I think if I had kind of the listening skills that I still need to get better at, I would be better at kind of understanding. John: Thats so true. His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. But, you want to be in a place where people care about you? You're exactly right. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. There's always joking, a lot of joking and the team, the organization from what I've heard and know of you is that they really, really, really appreciate your leadership within the organization. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. What would you be doing if you just couldnt be doing this? How are we going to attack this?". And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. So, people talk about business, it wasn't a slow beat. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. Talk about the importance of having diversity in the front office particularly. And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. Not only do you have to have the best facilities, the best resources, no reason for anybody to say, What want to be, you got to be good people. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. And I think my job is kind of the overall business and operations to go is a rapport with them that again, in the best case I always think an NBA player, this is a human business. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." John: Was Sonny Werblin still around, or was that the same? As commissioner of one of New York Citys longstanding pickup basketball games, Dan Feigin always knew where he would be every Saturday morning: inside the subterranean gymnasium at Trevor Day School in Manhattan, where he has worked for nearly three decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. Are they all going to be important or do you see one heavier leaning heavier than other, in terms of future revenue opportunities that are credible and consistent? The future for the Bucks, championship, championship, championship, and obviously getting fans back at the games. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. Before we get talking about all the amazing things you've done in basketball, and just coming off amazing championship. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. If youre not playing defense, theyre going to call you out, said Woodhouse, who would temper his Friday night activities in anticipation of The Run. Maybe I'm biased, but knowing you and seeing what you've done with the Bucks. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. I do." Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. He said it. I think COVID, like everything, slowed us up for about a year, but we're back on it. We had weekly calls. We dont compete against each other in arena revenue and local media revenue. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I don't know if it's still risk. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. It found him. Its certainly an example of how do you keep the entrepreneurial spirit in an organization and what better way to do it with chicken, and its great chicken. We're not an organization that splits up into silos of business or basketball. Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. Because I don't think we're really worried about kind of like we would think half a million people are going to die, that what would happen to hospitals and ICUs and things like that. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. The first kind of fully owned African American sports agency, whose main client was Arthur Ashe. A decades-long Manhattan pickup basketball game is on hold because of the pandemic, creating an emotional void for its rotating cast of actors, executives and regular joes. And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Within 45 minutes, we had this unbelievable excitement of, were nuts, why dont we do like take home its big ordering out. So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Its not really in a place where I could tell you, like, hey, heres our growth potential. Peter: We didnt finish the championship till mid-July, which meant like we didnt have long to get the rings included. Okay. John: It looks amazing. "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. Revolutionizing the talent booking industry with thousands of athletes, celebrities, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. Now, you had private equity partners. Im sure somehow our paths will cross. Peter: We have two kids. How do we rethink it? Peter Feigin: Just, just listen, just listen. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. Let that person speak. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. Those are simple, its his genius. That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. The Paul's, who acted in several other films including Double Trouble (1992), and The Road Raiders (1989), quickly became well known in the bodybuilding community for their great strength and power, as well as their rebellious barbarian attitude. Michael Red: Were you always a risk taker or was that cultivated in your household or where did that risk taking ability come from? Youre the ultimate insider. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. How do we continue to not only understand it, but monetize it in a very big way? Feigin distributed the shirts in February to The Runs regulars during a weekend retreat to Milwaukee, where his twin brother, Peter, works as the president of the Bucks. And Giannis knows whether we're talking about a big deal, whether we're talking about marketing, he knows those socks like he's good with, he owns me for a month now, he owns me. John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? How do we get the people to try and start the journey to professionalize and really build a gold standard operation. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. We always tell people, listen, if you want to work here, youre going to have to collaborate with people. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. Peter Feigin: That's an interesting statement. He is a legitimate superstar who also manages to bring in the European market. And what sort of plan could we have when there was some sort of light at the end of the tunnel to kind of ramp back up in a big way. Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. How can we help each other and learn from each other? Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think number one, it's restarting the business. I don't care where you take them from, then we're on a good path." What the heck do we do, like everybody else? Every Wednesday, Dan Feigin, now the director of Trevors Upper School on the Upper East Side, sends a mass email to determine who will be playing that weekend. Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. How do we think about marketing around the world? How did that come together? So, then you start thinking about really building a district in a small city within a city. We're talking about taking global influencers from F1 drivers to surfers, to everybody else. Im probably like someone who gives everything away. Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". Theres a lot of people that look up to you and want to be either the next Peter Feigin, or be an entrepreneur and do a startup. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. John: Unbelievable. People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. We've got Peter Feigin. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. Thomas F. Leonard . As you get older, its just harder to keep up with everybody., Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer, Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. We got to like we want to use our platform to affect change and change the world. But it's also, listen like I wish, I have patience for nothing, and I think what I'm learning and trying to get a grip of is like how do we chip away over every issue of social justice. You talk about advantages, just the osmosis at our dinner table was I knew in two seconds like I wanted to be in business. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. We scaled the company up to, a little bit under a billion dollars. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think I moved, I graduated from college and had a job, had an opportunity for a job that was kind of nuts. And you know what their experience is? I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. But the overarching is how do we maintain kind of championship caliber excellence, like across the business and across the team. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. And I think the balance is really, really tough because you know what an NBA season is. And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. But usually, The Run comprises a core group of 15 to 20 players who range from 16 to 58 years old. So, for people who run businesses, to have an operator who's really geared up and wants to drive revenue is kind of like a positive thing, especially for Mark and Wes. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . Thats good. Peter: Yeah, I will just tell you that was one of the most fun dreamlike things for us ever. Peter is a serious businessman and an hilarious friend. I really hope I get to meet you in the future. Feigin's first task was evident right away. Does he pass enough? Michael Red: I just, I got to start the podcast off with, before we get into our history, someone just texted me and wanted me to ask you this question. My father happened to pass away probably within a couple months and very close with Mark and Wes, who basically at that time said, Well, you now have to really consider this and do this. And at the time, I always say, I was their last hope because of the timing of the acquisition. If you're going to go look at teams, grab my brother. Why shouldn't we resemble the city we work and live in, instead of kind of what national things are? What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? "We didn't have much time," he says. How do you end up managing the importance of numbers and capital. How do you get people who care? You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. Feigin can do all the PR he wants, but the most effective pitch to get fans into the new arena is out of his hands. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. What people never tell you about the rings, its not just the 20 rings for the players and the coach and the owners. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. You can imagine, yes, Id rather be in Miami for 180 days, no question. Since 3-pointers are worth 2 points and 2-pointers are only worth 1, there is a strong premium on outside shooting. Peter Feigin: I mean, just different ways, we started to think about doing this. But for us, it's kind of like, "How do we make an equal playing field? You could also see their new uniform styles at Bucks Pro Shop. We're not only going to be public, we're going to privately help kind of move the cause and funding. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. Social media has created an avenue to spread the Bucks' brand beyond Milwaukee and the United States. We are going to put in the notes Peters email address because he was kind enough to give us that. While Feigin can watch Antetokounmpo and the Bucks any time he wants on NBA 2K or social media -- "The truth is our digital channels are ten times like what our local broadcasts are," he says -- he has the distinct pleasure in Milwaukee of actually getting to catch the action in person. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. It was just such a big deal. And they all live kind of the job we all live kind of each other's lives. Its gotten through its first iteration to see where it is. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. Peter Feigin: I mean, I'll tell you an interesting story. John: Yeah. Peter: Oh, my goodness. 1 team in the league, to be the brand representation.' Listen, for the rest of my life, having a boycott for the game in the bubble where we put a pause in the world. All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.". Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. And this is how cities evolve. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. John: This must be one of the greatest rides of her life seeing you do this whole journey, huh? "We have a really simple mantra. Peter: I think when the opportunity came and we thought it was such a good idea, we were aiming an incredible. This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? Some guys I went to high school with some guys who played college, and I leaked it at the opportunity at that game on a Saturday morning and everybody went absolutely nuts because for better or worse, Im kind of being your average guy, you do not think Peter Fiegins going to have the opportunity to become an NBA president to do it and these jobs are so rare and so incredible. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. Lasry, who has been active in Democratic Party politics, has invited various campaign staffers. "Why would we wait till tomorrow when we can get it done today?" Peter Feigin: And I think, even when we looked at ourselves we're completely diverse, but we weren't anywhere near where we should have been on the leadership side of being a diverse leadership. Thats for every aspect of it. You miss throwing that pass. Their experience is basketball. You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. And my brother said, "Oh, my God. Kind of surreal. What did your dad do for a living? Because I hadnt worked in, Id worked in New York city. Crazy simple story grew up in New York City, Manhattan on the Upper East Side, went to high school in Brooklyn. Michael Red: That's great advice. Absolutely. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports.
